The St. Michael Catholic School Robotics Program services our youth from grades 1st thru 8th through programs guided by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). FIRST was founded in 1989 and is proven to encourage students to pursue education and careers in STEM-related fields. Our program is separated into three age appropriate subprograms.

  • FIRST LEGO Explore (Formerly FLL JR)
    • Designed to introduce STEM concepts for grades 1-3.  Programming basics are introduced, teams research and build a model to solve a real-world challenge.
  • FIRST LEGO Challenge (Formerly FLL)
    • Teams are presented with a real-world problem and are challenged to develop a solution through research and innovation. They learn to program the robot to navigate through a course, solving technical challenges.  This level is available for grades 4th-6th
  • FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC)
    • Teams are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in head-to-head challenges.  Students also learn to market their team through fundraising and community outreach.  This level is available for grades 7th and 8th.

The robotics season begins in the fall.  Depending upon subprogram level and progression in competitions, the season concludes sometime between November and February.  Each team is comprised of 3-10 students and is led by 2-5 parent mentors.  The mentors and students learn together and no experience is necessary at any of the levels. Teams meet 1-2 times per week.  Meeting times are determined by team mentor availability.
